Fresh from his amazing treble-podium at Monza last weekend, Jordan King set the fourth fastest time during pre-event testing ahead of the penultimate round of Formula Renault 2.0 UK at Brands Hatch on Friday.

Rounds 17 and 18 of the series take place on the legendary Grand Prix circuit this weekend, a track Jordan knows after contesting the UK round of the FIA Formula Two Championship here in July.

Despite King’s recent experience of the circuit, the young rookie was caught out after pushing too hard through Sheene Curve in the opening session. Running quickest of all the drivers up to that point, King outbraked himself and spun into the gravel – ending his first session after just four laps. King dropped to sixth on the timesheets by the end of the running as he was forced to watch from the sidelines, with his car lying stricken at the side of the circuit.

His No.42 machine was completely undamaged in the incident and Jordan himself had no ill effects from his minor off. “It’s all part of the race weekend,” he mused. “I just pushed a little too hard. I lost a bit of track time but I was fastest at the time, so I’m feeling quite confident.”

His confidence came to fruition in the day’s second session as Jordan blasted towards the front of the field. The Hugo Boss Brand Ambassador held second for much of the running, before slipping down to fourth in the last five minutes.

King had one final crack at stealing the top spot and moved back into second place with a stellar last lap. With the chequered flag waving however, there was just enough time remaining for Daniel Cammish and Oliver Rowland to jump back ahead of King, pushing the Manor driver down to fourth. Championship leader Alex Lynn topped the times.

Tomorrow’s two qualifying sessions take place at 9:25 and 14:30 respectively, setting the grids for another fascinating double header of racing on Sunday. A bumper crowd is expected in Kent over the weekend as the Indian summer conditions continue to sweep over the country.
