King claims second in F1 support race
Jordan King finished second in the opening race of the highly publicised MRF Delhi Championship in India today (Saturday), racing on the support bill of the inaugural F1 Indian Grand Prix.
Twenty talented young drivers from around the world have been invited to contest the $100,000 double-header in Delhi and King didn’t waste time acclimatising to the brand new GP venue as he set the third fastest time during qualifying on Friday.
Pole-sitter Nick Percat was able to pull away from the start of the race as King put pressure on a familiar face in second place – his Formula Renault team-mate Alice Powell. Former Australian Formula Ford Champion Percat had pulled out an unassailable lead by the time King made his move stick on Powell to claim a well earned second place at the finish.
The second race takes place ahead of the Formula One GP tomorrow and will be watched by thousands of fans at the circuit and important delegates from the F1 paddock – the winner will win $50,000 with second and third taking $30,000 and $20,000 respectively.
The drivers are piloting identical Van Diemen single-seater chassis that boasts a 1.6 litre Ford Duratec Engine. It is effectively a Formula Ford car with ‘slicks and wings’ and has been rigorously tested by a host of professional drivers, including India’s F1 star Narain Karthikeyan.
An update will follow on Jordan’s website after the final race tomorrow before a full report is filed early next week.
